Is Your Job Beginning to Feel Like A Prison Sentence?

I came across a post on quora.com. Someone asked the question: Is it normal to feel like I'm in prison at work?

Someone answered: Yes, it is normal to feel like you are in prison while at work, because of the following parallels:

  1. You aren’t a person; you are a number. Just as prison issues numbers, employers issue numbers.
  2. Prison has a strict dress code. Employers have a strict dress code.
  3. Have you ever observed a large office in a big tech company? One day, during the pandemic, I was the only one on my floor. I took a moment to observe the layout. The rows of uniform cubicles bore an eerie semblance to prison cells.
  4. Like prisoners, workers are allotted a certain amount of time for breaks. Have you ever seen your co-workers walking around the building during a break to get some fresh air? Does it not remind you of prisoners walking around “the yard?”
  5. Some prisoners dream of the day they are released or attempt to plot their escape to freedom. And, likewise, some workers plot their escape to financial freedom, from a boss/warden.
  6. Some prisoners are institutionalized and are content with staying in prison indefinitely, because they can’t cope in society. Further, some will dissuade others from dreaming or plotting an escape. Similarly, some workers are content with working their entire life at a “9-to-5” and will dissuade others from attempting to break away from the office grind and to work for oneself, because they are fearful of striking out on their own or don’t want to see others break away.

Well, I’ve never been to prison, and you probably haven’t either, but I've watched enough television to get an idea of what prison life is like. And yes, there have been jobs that I have worked at that actually felt like I was in prison sometimes. At one job in particular, the supervisor actually timed our bathroom breaks. One day, I had an upset stomach, and I kept going back and forth to the bathroom. One time, when I got back to my desk, my supervisor called me into her office and wanted to know why I was up and down to the bathroom so much. She said she had timed me once and said I stayed in there seven minutes. I explained that I had an upset stomach. She told me I just needed to hold it. Well, that very day I began looking for another job, and it wasn't long before I left.

When I read the person’s reply comparing working a job to prison, I thought about the many people I talk with who say they need and want to earn more money, but instead of taking a chance on starting their own business part-time, they go and get a second job.

Now, I realize that some people like the routine and structure of a 9-5. It really suits them, and there is nothing wrong with that. Then there are others who feel trapped. They feel like they have no time for themselves or their families. They feel like they are being robbed of what they really want to do. These people are true entrepreneurs at heart and will never be content with a typical 9 to 5 job.

If you have similar feelings most days going into work, it may be an indication that the 9 to 5 life isn't for you. It’s time to cast your net on the other side. Are you familiar with the story in John 21:5-8? In the story, Peter and his crew had been fishing all night and hadn’t caught a thing. When Jesus came up to them, they didn’t recognize Him. Jesus, a man they didn’t recognize, said to them, "Children, do you have any fish?" They answered, "No". Then Jesus said to them, "Cast your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some."

Now, there was no logical reason why fishing in the morning would be better than fishing at night. And there was no logical reason why fishing on one side of the boat would be better than the other side, but Jesus saw something that they did not see. I imagine the men may have had a very human response and whispered among themselves, "Who is this man to tell us to go against what we know and cast on the opposite side? Who is He to tell us to go against our culture and our way of doing things? This is what my family has done for years!" Nevertheless, deep down inside, something told them to go ahead and do as the Man asked. When they took a chance and stepped out on faith, they were successful beyond their expectations. There were so many fish that they were not able to haul them in.

Of course, I’m not Jesus, but today, if you're sick and tired of being sick and tired of working a job that you hate going to and not even making enough money to meet your needs, I am saying to you, "cast your net on the other side." I am a financial services professional with the largest independent financial services company in North America. Did you know that the financial services industry has created the greatest number of millionaires since modern times? Listen, there is no good reason why you can’t be one too, but you'll never become one by working a typical 9 to 5.

Is your job beginning to feel like a prison sentence? This is the perfect time to cast your net on the other side and start a home-based business. Don't waste your time and energy on getting a second job or on a fly-by-night dead-end business opportunity. Join the industry that has created the greatest number of millionaires since modern times and a company with longevity that has been around since 1977 and continues to grow daily and document business owners earning six figures to a million dollars or more a year.
