This morning, as I was taking communion and thanking Jesus for what He did on the cross, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. I thanked Him for the stripes on His back, the shedding of His blood, and the nails in His hands and feet. However, when I reached the crown of thorns on His head, the Lord would not let me move past it. I began to reflect on the spiritual meaning of that crown. Thorns first appear in the Bible following the curse placed upon the ground after the fall of man in Genesis 3:17 through 18. At that moment, the ground began to produce thorns and thistles, marking a significant change in the relationship between humanity and creation. Later, Roman soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head, pairing it with a purple robe and a reed scepter to ridicule and mock His royalty. While they intended to insult Him, God had something else in mind.
The thorns placed on Jesus’ head were not merely symbolic. He was literally wearing the curse upon His head, taking on the full weight of the physical and spiritual devastation that sin produced. He became a curse for us. He did not just carry our sin in His body; He also bore the battle that goes on in our minds. Jesus allowed thorns to pierce His head so that you would not have to live under torment in yours. God was reminding me, and now I remind you, that the crown of thorns represented more than just suffering. It was an act of substitution. Because of this, we have the power and authority to reject false ideas, prideful arguments, and negative thoughts that oppose God’s truth. We can choose to release every burden and torment at the feet of Jesus, trusting in the freedom He purchased for us. Letting go isn’t always easy, but we are empowered by His sacrifice to surrender our struggles and receive His peace. No matter how heavy the battle feels, we can give everything that causes us anxiety, pressure, and torment back to the One who already carried it. Comments are closed.
