              Walking By Faith

Agree With God

Recently someone said that because we are human, we will never be able to walk according the will of God, we will always fall.

Unfortunately, many people believe this way, and use this belief as an excuse to willfully sin. This belief keeps them from experiencing God's best. While it is true that we all can fall short, or all of us can be tempted, this belief is different from knowing your limitations and using wisdom to avoid temptation. As a man thinks in his heart so is he.  If you think you will fall, you will.

God will never command, ask or tell us to do something that we cannot do, that He has not empowered us to do. As believers, we must remember that we have been born again. The old man is dead, we are new creations in Christ. We can do all things through Christ Jesus who lives in us. We must agree with God on this matter.

In Amos 3:3, the question is asked “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” To walk with God we must agree with Him. If God says I love you and we say you couldn't possibly love me, then this belief will limit our walk with God and keep us from drawing close to Him. Not believing and coming into agreement with God will hinder our relationship with Him and our prayer life. When we pray, our prayer should come in agreement with what God has declared. It should not be a barrage of commands and complaints to God.

Looking at what Jesus taught us about prayer, we see that prayer is about aligning ourselves with God’s values, with His character and with His will and plan. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. -- Matthew 6:10.

I don’t know about you, but I want to align myself with God’s will and plan because I am not all knowing. I’ve learned that my will and plan can sometimes put me in situations that are not good for me.

Although He has invited us to ask Him for whatever we want, God’s will is for us to know Him in a personal way and to live for Him.

“Agree with God, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you. Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. -- Job 22:21-22 (ESV)

When we pray God’s will for our lives, we are setting aside, what we want and desire, and asking for what he desires instead. (Mark 11:24, Mark 11:24, James 4:3)

Praying in agreement with God is inviting the Power of God into the situation. Does God need our help? Nope! He is all powerful and in control of everything in His creation, but prayer is the means God has ordained for some things to happen.

Throughout the Bible we see that God acted on prayer and declaration according to His word. In 1 Kings 18:20-40 Elijah prayed for God to prove His power. God answered that prayer and all the followers of Baal who were present had no choice but to confess the power of the Lord.

In 1 Samuel, chapters 1 and 2 Hannah desperately wanted a child. She knew that the only one with the power to give her the desire of her heart was the Lord, and she asked God for a baby. God heard Hannah and her prayer touched the Lord so much that He was moved to give her a child. As promised, Hannah gave her child back to the Lord and Samuel grew up to become a great prophet.

While Jesus was on the earth, He set the example of how we should communicate with God by saying prayers himself. In Gethsemane, Jesus pleaded with his Father to avoid the torture and death that he knew awaited him. (Matthew 26:39) He knew what was going to happen and there was no way to avoid it and accomplish the will of God, so He yielded to God’s plan and ended his prayer with a statement of complete obedience to God: “…not as I will, but as you will.” Jesus expressed His desires to God, but because He knew what was at stake, His ultimate desire was to do what God wanted Him to do. Halleluiah!

God will not do things contrary to His nature, His laws, or His love. In all of these examples, the prayers did not defy God’s nature or His laws. God always wants to answer our prayers to our satisfaction, but if we pray against His will for our lives, then it might appear that our prayers go unanswered. He reveals His character, laws, and His love in His word. If we pray according to His word, then when we pray, we will pray according to His will.

When we walk with God, He walks with us; when we walk against God, He walks against us. Read Leviticus 26:14-16, 21-24, and ask yourself, “Am I walking in agreement with God – or am I walking in disagreement against God?” We all can get off track and need realignment. If you find yourself leaning to your own understanding and will, rather than God’s repent, realign yourself with His will and make the decision to follow Jesus’ example and say Father not my will but thine be done.
