Many Believers come from a background where communion is only celebrated in a church setting with an ordained minister or priest, who provides a special consecration and prayer, or religious objects and symbolism. With the changes in our culture because of the pandemic, many people wonder is it biblical to take communion at home? What does God think about it?
Do you believe that you need to be in a church setting to take communion, that taking communion at home would be sacrilegious? Communion is a personal symbol of your gratitude to Jesus for what He did at the cross, so taking communion at home is not sacrilegious, but rather it is a beautiful tradition to honor Jesus. You can take the Communion at home with the Lord, or at your church. You don't have to wait for a pastor or a priest to administer communion or a certain day. It doesn't matter what you use. For the cup, you don't need to use wine, or grape juice, you can use water. For the bread, you don't have to have unleavened bread; you can use a piece of cracker or bread.
Before you take communion, read my post, Holy Communion What Is It really About?
As you partake, focus on that truth that Jesus freely sacrificed His body at the Cross for you. He bore your sickness in His body at the Cross (Matthew 8:17). This is how you worthily partake of the bread. If there is any type of sickness in your body, as you pray, be conscious of the healing, not the sickness.
The way to worthily drink of the cup is to focus on how Jesus shed His blood for the remission of your sin. Jesus said, "This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you." He shed His blood for the remission of sin, not for the consciousness.
Here are the steps to take communion at home:
Of course, communion is a personal fellowship between you and the Savior, so there are no right and wrong words to say as long as you are honoring the Savior, but here are the steps and a sample prayer that I pray:
Sample Prayer Confession:
Father God, thank You for this day. Thank You for Your love, mercy, and grace. I ask God that You show me Your Glory. Show Your glory in Me. Show your glory to my family. Show Your glory in My family. Show your glory to my pastors and my church family. Show Your glory in My Pastors and in My church Family. Show Your glory in this Earth. Father, show us Your glory. In Jesus' name, I ask. Amen
Now take of the bread and make this confession:
Now, Lord God Jesus, You said that we should do this as often as we remember you. I thank You, Lord, for going to the Cross that we may be redeemed back to The Father. So, Lord Jesus, I thank You for going to the cross for me. I thank You for the privilege to fellowship with You, to break bread with You. Lord Jesus just as you distributed the bread and the wine among the disciples, I receive these elements as from Your hands. Lord God, I thank You for the sacrifice of Your body.
Lord Jesus, I thank You that in Your body You bore all my sins, all my diseases, all my pains-- physically and emotionally. You’ve even bore my aging so that my youth is renewed like the eagle. By faith, I am healed from (name whatever sickness or problem you want healed) ________________________.
I am healed from hypertension. I am healed from diabetes. I am healed from all heart and organ abnormalities. I am healed in both my eyes. By your stripes I am healed in my brain. I am healed of forgetfulness. My brain is made whole in every way. I have the mind of Christ. By your stripes, I am made whole. By your stripes, my family relationship is healed.
Now partake of the bread and thank the Lord:
Lord Jesus, I partake of this bread as a symbol of your body. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
Now take of the cup and make this confession:
Lord Jesus, I thank You being the Sacrificial Lamb, for shedding Your blood, for it is written that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness, there is no release from sin and its guilt, nor cancellation of the merited punishment of sin. Thank You, Jesus, for tearing down the wall that separated me and the Father, for tearing down that veil. Thank You for the New Covenant and all You have provided for me through Your sacrifice at the Cross. Because of You, all the promises of God are yes, and Amen in You. I receive those promises now!
You have redeemed me from the curse of the law, by becoming a curse for me. I am healed. I am redeemed from poverty and lack, for You are my Shepherd, I shall not want. I am the head and not the tail. I am above only and never beneath. I thank You and I praise You for sanctification. I praise You for victory. I praise You for breakthrough. I praise You for protection and for long life. I praise You for all that You have done.
Partake of the cup and thank the Lord:
Lord Jesus, I partake of this wine as a symbol of the blood You shed on the Cross. Thank You, Jesus. Amen. Amen. Amen.
