When I was younger, I thought, "Why do I need all this insurance?" I thought that it was a waste of my hard-earned money. Then there came a time when I had to have a surgical procedure and my health insurance covered most of the cost of the procedure.
If I hadn’t had the insurance that I complained about, I would have had to pay several thousand dollars. When I saw the bill, I learned to appreciate insurance. We can’t stop life from happening. Unforeseen tragedies such as accidents, fires, floods, illness, injury, or permanent disability, even death, can leave you and your family facing tremendous emotional and financial stress. As we grow older, get married, build families, and start businesses, we come to realize that life insurance is a fundamental part of having a sound financial plan.
Insurance is a way of managing and transferring risks. For example, if you take out a loan or mortgage to purchase a new car or home, your lender wants to be sure that your vehicle or home is financially protected from potential damage. So, they protect their investment by requiring you to purchase insurance. For instance, just about every single state requires you to carry at least a minimum amount of liability insurance. Why? Well, the truth is that a lot of people aren’t able to pay for the expensive damage that can happen because of an accident.
Insurance is a way to help not only you, but those around you. Yes, you pay a fee to your insurance company, and you may never have to file a claim (that’s the part that made me think it was a waste of my hard-earned money), but when the unexpected happened, I was grateful insurance was there.
If your loved ones depend on your financial support for their livelihood, then life insurance is a must, because it replaces your income when you die. I was watching the movie "JADA." Jada is the story of a woman whose life becomes chaotic when her husband is killed in a car accident. As a result, Jada and her children became homeless and had to live in their car. The movie made me think of the many families who end up on the streets because there was no life insurance or not enough coverage.
Death and life insurance is something most people think is morbid, so they try to avoid thinking about it. The truth is, death will come to each of us whether we think about it or not, and none of us knows when it will come. Life can change in the blink of an eye, as it did for Jada and her children. It is not fearful thinking, but smart thinking...
