Jesus said in John 10:10 that Satan comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. His native language is lie (John 8:44). He has been trying to deceive man since the Garden through a clever line of reasoning. His plan was, and is, is to get us to question God in our hearts. He tries to get us to question our position in God (are you really saved?) He tries to get us to question God's love for us, His character and His Word. He needed Eve to believe that he knows what he's talking about, so he implied that he was an authority on the matter of whether eating of the tree would kill them. As the conversation continued, Eve saw that the tree "was pleasant to the eyes" (verse 6). Satan uses this same trap today to get people to entertain fantasies in their thought life. Unfortunately, those fantasies often turn into reality. Satan attempted to use this same tactic on Jesus in the wilderness: "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread" (Luke 4:3). Paraphrase: "If you are God’s Son, why are you hungry?" However, every time the devil tempted Jesus, he replied with, "It is written," and then quoted Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11). Jesus the Son of God, led by the Spirit of God, fought the devil with the Word of God. If Eve had walked away, or not listened and ignored Satan or told him to stop talking, she would never have fallen into Satan’s trap. When Satan comes to you with the question: "Did God really say?" Especially in the midst of temptation. Whether he whispers it to us or uses another person, we should answer the devil as Jesus did, with the Word of God. Like Jesus, we must know who we are, be intentional, and stand up to Satan. When we do, he will flee from us. Oh yes, he will come again with another cunning trick, but do the same thing, and he will flee. Don’t allow him to get into your head. Take every thought captive and go in the opposite direction of sin. Remember the promises of God. Believe what God has said. Put the Word of God in your mouth. Satan has no answer for a believer who stands on the Word.
